Nikon ProStaff 3 Laser Rangefinder, Black

Better than expected.
I bought this product from Gander Mountain because they had it for about the same price as Amazon. They had many units available to try out in their store, so I got to try most of the top brands including Leupold, Nikon, Bushnell and others. Although this is not the top rangefinder out there, it does what I need, and it is well under $200 including tax or shipping. I have no need or desire to have a $400+ rangefinder. My uses are for hunting and mid-long range rifle shooting (200-600 yards). The Prostaff 3 does the job perfectly. It says "550 yard effective range" right on the top of it, but it keeps on working past that on reflective targets. So far the farthest "metal" target return I have gotten is 623 yards and I am getting "tree" returns of over 500 yards. This is better than advertised numbers...I am happy. I'm sure it will go longer distances for metal, I just haven't tried any yet.

Nikon Prostaff 3 Hunting YES; Golf NO
2 of my golf buddies use laser rangefinders in my group. One has a Callaway 550, the other a Nikon Monarch 800. Both units are made by Nikon, which detects pin placements quickly and accurately.
I used a free gps App on my phone, but lacked a few courses we played. Therefore, I finally decided to purchase a unit of my own.
The Nikon Monarch 800 was too much for my needs, and is no longer in production anyway. The Callaway rangefinders are in my target range for distances I need, but not the price I want to pay. That's when I found the Nikon Prostaff 3. It has the similar specs as the Callaway units, without the graphics and at a much lower price.
Reviews pertaining to usage on a golf course were mixed at best, with no reasons specifying otherwise. Checking the Manufacturer's product description is just as worthless, as it does not advocate nor discourage the use of this unit for golf, per se.

My first and probably only range finder ever. I checked accuracy on a measured range and was dead on at all ranges tested up to 100 yds. Other unmeasured distances seemed plausable and realistic. This will definitely help me next deer season and on the golf course. Its 6X scope alone may replace my 8X binoculars on the hunt. Sight picture is sharp and clear. The price was right.
