Penn Mariner Standup
I have a pair of these matched to Penn Squall 40 Lever Drags and absolutely love them. I use them dual purpose for trolling hard baits for Kings and Wahoo, as well as using them to bottom fish for grouper and snapper. They work perfectly in both facets of saltwater fishing. They're tough and dependable, I've even caught a 100 pound plus bull shark on one of them that ate a snapper that I was reeling in, using 40 pound line with a circle hook.
So Far, So Good...
These rods appear to be very well built and solid, and they are most definitely stout! I had thought about getting the "Heavy" version of this rod (660CHST) rather than this "Medium" edition (630CMST), but at the last minute I changed my mind --and I'm glad I did. The 630CMSTs are plenty stiff.
I purchased 2 of the rods and I plan to pair them with Shimano TLD-20 reels (spooled with 40 lb Yo-Zuri Hybrid line) and use them in 2 situations (offshore of Southport NC, around Frying Pan Shoals):
(1) Pulling medium to large deep-diving plugs (Rapala Magnum CD14s and CD18s, Rapala X-Rap Magnum 15s & 20s, and Bomber CD25s and CD30s) for Wahoo, Mahi, Tuna, and King Mackerel.
(2) Pulling large spoons and Sea Witch skirts (w/ballyhoos or strips) behind a small-medium sized planer for those same fish.
Of course, I needed a reasonably stiff rod for these applications, and the 2 Mariner's definitely fit the bill. I won't be able to actually try them out...
Great rod for the price!
I have a lot of saltwater fishing equipment (too much per my wife) and this rod is a very good rod for the price. Tough and solid!Good looking well finished rod.
